John’s Retirement Day
It was retirement day for John. He woke up early, dressed in his best suit, and went downstairs to the living room. His wife,Mary, was already there, reading the morning paper. She looked up at him and smiled.
“Good morning, dear. Are you ready for your big day?”
John nodded and sat down next to her. He picked up the newspaper and began to read. But his mind was elsewhere. He was thinking about what his life would be like now that he was retired.
He had always been a busy man, working long hours at the office. But now he would have all the time in the world. He could do whatever he wanted. It was a strange feeling, but a good one.
The doorbell rang and John got up to answer it. His boss, Mr. Richardson, was there with a box of cigars.
“John, I just wanted to stop by and say congratulations on your retirement. You deserve it after all these years of hard work.”
John thanked him and they shook hands. Mr. Richardson wished him a good retirement and then left.
John sat back down and tried to read the paper again.
